SII to Spin Off Scientific Instruments Division to Reinforce Operations

Seiko Instruments Inc. (Abbreviation: SII; President, COO & CFO: Yukihiko Chayama; Hea Office: 1-8 Nakase, Mihama-ku, Chiba, Chiba Prefecture; Tel: 043-211-1111) will spin off its Scientific Instruments Division which is involved in the development, manufacture and sale of scientific instruments such as nano measurement and analysis instruments, and establish the new company “SII Nano Technology Inc.” that will begin operation as of December 1, 2003.

The SII Scientific Instruments Division was launched in 1970 and has since been involved in the manufacture and sale of scientific instruments such as fluorescent X-ray analysis, atomic absorption spectrochemical analysis and thermal analysis devices. The division was the first in Japan to manufacture focused ion beam microscopes in 1986 and probe microscopes in 1987. In recent years, many of these products have been utilized at the frontier of nanotechnology research and development, including in the development and manufacture of semiconductors, resulting in a high reputation in the marketplace and the establishment of the division as one of the main pillars of SII.

The nanotechnology market is expected to expand rapidly, while competition intensifies in the market. The spin-off is a part of the company’s strategy to gain recognition for its scientific instruments business in the market and to reinforce its flexibility to respond to customers’ diversifying needs. With the new company, SII aims to bolster the competitiveness of its scientific instruments business globally and continually improve its business worth while keeping its eye on the market.

The new company will take over the scientific instruments business from SII upon merging with SII Microscope Inc., an SII wholly owned scientific instruments business subsidiary established on March 1, 2000 that changed its name to SII Nano Technology Inc. on October 30, 2003 in preparation for the merger. In addition, the SII’s wholly owned subsidiary company Epolead Service Inc. will become an SII Nano Technology Inc.’s subsidiary company, and continue to provide maintenance services and supplies for scientific instruments.

SII will focus on the development of SII Nano Technology Inc. as a leading company of nano measurement and analysis, and strive to contribute to the development of nanotechnologies while actively responding to consumer needs.
