Offering True Pronunciation with a Native Speaker's Natural Voice Based on an MP3 Playback System! SII Releases "IC Dictionary SR-V7130," a Chinese Language Electronic Dictionary Featuring an Audio & Card Function that Permits Content Additions

Seiko Instruments Inc. (Abbreviation: SII; President, COO & CFO: Yukihiko Chayama; Head Office: 8, Nakase 1-chome, Mihama-ku, Chiba-shi, Chiba ; Tel: 043-211-1111) will release in mid December “SR-V7130,” an electronic dictionary that features true pronunciation of single Chinese characters, important compound words, keywords and conversational phrases of well-established Chinese language system dictionaries using the natural voice of a native speaker.

The “SR-V7130” model to be released is equipped with the basic functions of the extremely popular Chinese electronic dictionaries “SR-T7030” and “SR-T5030” as well as a new audio feature that provides Chinese language pronunciation. In addition to “reading,” “writing” and “speaking,” the new electronic dictionary emphasizes “listening to” and “imitating” difficult-to-pronounce Chinese words, allowing the user to learn the Chinese language in real terms.

In addition, “SR-V7130” utilizes the durable and lightweight material “magnesium alloy” in the electronic dictionary body. Through the fusion of magnesium alloy properties (superior strength, rigidity, impact resistance, ding&dent resistance and vibration resistance & absorbency) with the damper principle, the new dictionary utilizes the SII proprietary “damper shell structure” (Note 1) which absorbs and repels shock due to impact. The new “damper shell structure” exhibits a vastly improved design as a result of component casing reevaluation and space optimization in an effort to ensure more efficient impact absorbency and bounce-back qualities. Detailed reevaluation and improvements in the SII original “KaiteKey” PC-touch specification which enables PC-like input has made key entry easier than ever as well.
The new electronic dictionary is also provided with a new “SILUCA” card slot which permits later dictionary additions. With this new feature, the user can add dictionaries, encyclopedias and other reference materials at any time.
The search features provided include a “multi-dictionary search feature” that allows the user to search multiple dictionaries at once, an “example sentence search feature” which facilitates example sentence searches based on a specified word order, and a “Chinese character 48-dot display feature,” making the search features that are unique to electronic dictionaries even more powerful. Usability has also been dramatically improved.
Note 1: Patent pending

[Main Special Features of Provided Functions]
1. Clear pronunciation with the natural voice and intonation of a native speaker
The new dictionary provides audio for the pronunciation of single Chinese characters and compound words in the “Chuunichi Jiten” (“Chinese/Japanese Dictionary”), all keywords in the “Chuunichi Pasokon Yougo Jiten” (“Chinese/Japanese Dictionary of PC Terms”), conversational phrases in the “Chuugokugo Kaiwa Tossa no Hitokoto Jiten” (“Dictionary of Chinese for Unexpected Situations”), conversational phrases in the “Eikaiwa Tossa no Hitokoto Jiten” (“Dictionary of English for Unexpected Situations”). The pronunciation is provided by the natural voice of a true native speaker, a quality lacking in synthetic audio. Since pronunciation of Chinese words that are difficult to aurally comprehend reportedly requires repeated listening and imitating, this feature is a must-have for the Chinese language learner.

(Voice Audio Provided)
•Chuunichi Jiten (Chinese/Japanese Dictionary): All single Chinese characters (approx. 13,000) and important compound words (approx. 1,300)
•Chuunichi Pasokon Yougo Jiten (Chinese/Japanese Dictionary of PC Terms): 4,136 words
•Chuugokugo Kaiwa Tossa no Hitokoto Jiten (Dictionary of Chinese for Unexpected Situations): Approx. 2,000 conversational phrases
Eikaiwa Tossa no Hitokoto Jiten (Dictionary of English for Unexpected Situations): Approx. 3,000 conversational phrases

The voice audio can be heard using either the built-in speakers or the earphones provided as an accessory.

2. Clear, high quality audio provided by an MP3 playback system & multi-layered ceramic piezoelectric speakers
The electronic dictionary utilizes an MP3 system that permits real playback of the native speaker’s natural voice for both Chinese and English. The dictionary is also equipped with ultra-thin, compact and lightweight multi-layered ceramic speakers, resulting in an even smaller and lightweight electronic dictionary design. The multi-layered ceramic piezoelectric speakers have superior medium and high frequency acoustic characteristics, ensuring clear and distinct audio. The speakers are actively used with state-of-the-art cellular phones, digital cameras, IC recorders and notebook PCs, offering low power consumption, no magnetic leakage and, consequently, zero impact on other electric devices, magnetic cards, pacemakers and the like. The earphones provided as an accessory support listening with both ears, allowing the user to concentrate on the voice audio.

3. Equipped with a “SILUCA” card slot, permitting dictionary, encyclopedia and other reference material additions at any time
The SR-V7130 body is equipped with a “SILUCA” card slot, permitting later dictionary additions at any time. This feature allows the user to add any required or preferred dictionaries, encyclopedias or reference materials (including, in the future, cards with voice audio) to the included dictionaries whenever s/he pleases.
“SILUCA” is a nickname for the SII Original Contents Card. The “SILUCA” card, which is expected to be a hot item in the years to come, offers the same usability, search speed and other characteristics as built-in dictionaries, enabling crisp searches without any sense of stress.

4. A new level of toughness with the new “magnesium alloy” & “damper shell structure” material
SII was quick to adopt “magnesium alloy,” a material increasingly employed in car parts, cellular phones and notebook PCs, in the body material of the electronic dictionary. Through combined use with a “damper shell structure” which maximizes the “strength,” “rigidity,” “impact resistance,” “ding/dent resistance” and other properties of this new material, SII has raised the standard for electronic dictionary toughness, i.e. LCD protection, to a new level. By reevaluating the casing design of each component to ensure efficient impact absorbency and bounce-back qualities, SII has achieved impact resistance to the highest level. The “damper shell structure” is one SII answer to toughness.

5. The lightest built-in speaker model! A mere 220 g (with batteries installed)
Through a case optimizing design incorporating innovations such as “magnesium alloy” which is considered the lightest metal for practical use, and “multi-layered ceramic piezoelectric speakers” which minimize case size and weight without sacrificing high-quality sound, designers were able to realize the lightest built-in speaker model of its class.
*The dictionary is the lightest among portable electronic dictionaries in the market of Japan. As of November 2004.

6. An improved crisp key entry “KaiteKey” PC-touch specification that makes input even easier
The SII original “KaiteKey” PC-touch specification has been even further improved, realizing maximum key touch. The feature enables crisp key entry without any sense of stress. Key entry is performed on the word lookup starting line. The feature which provides the comfortable input feel at this starting line is “KaiteKey.”

7. Capable of searching all built-in dictionaries and “SILUCA” card dictionaries at once
The new electronic dictionary allows the user to search for an entered word using all included dictionaries (including any card dictionaries). The feature also allows the user to search all dictionaries for an unknown word using the asterisk (for multiple characters) and question mark (for a single character) wildcards. (The search all feature supports exact matches only.)

8. A new “word order specific all dictionary example sentence search feature” which searches for example sentences based on a specified word order
This new example sentence search feature allows the user to search all dictionaries for example sentences which match a specified word order. By allowing the user to narrow down the example sentences to be found, the feature enables quick identification of target

9. Permits example sentence searches using the super jump feature!
The new dictionary allows the user to immediately look up and check the method of use of any unfamiliar word that appears in a dictionary. Using the super jump feature, the user can search all dictionaries for example sentences that include that word. In addition, the user can select the first word of an idiom found using the idiom search feature, for instance, and execute super jump to find example sentences that contain that idiom. This feature is helpful when writing documents or papers in English, for example.

10. Chuunichi Jiten (Chinese/Japanese Dictionary) single character 48-dot display
This feature makes complex characters with high stroke counts extremely easy to read.

Other available features include a new vocabulary notebook with checkmark and sorting capabilities (1,000 items total); wild card search; spell check; idiom (phrase) search; character component search; radical, kanji and total stroke count search; mode key ON; font size switching; history (100 items); environment settings; and calculator features.
