SII Releases "IC Dictionary SR-V4700," an Electronic Dictionary for High School Students and University Applicants that Emphasizes Listening/Reading Comprehension and Essay Examination Preparation

Seiko Instruments Inc. (Abbreviation: SII; President, CEO, COO & CFO: Yukihiko Chayama; Head Office: 1-8 Nakase, Mihama-ku, Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture; Tel: 043-211-1111) will release “IC Dictionary SR-V4700,” an electronic dictionary that emphasizes English listening/reading comprehension and essay examination preparation, making the dictionary a helpful tool for the high school student and university applicant.

The new “SR-V4700” model to be released features an enhanced audio pronunciation feature designed to prepare the student for the listening test to be introduced by the National Center for University Entrance Examination in 2006. The new electronic dictionary provides the pronunciation for the terminology and example sentences that appear in Obunsha’s well-established wordbook “Eitango Taagetto 1900” (“English Vocabulary Target 1900”), making the dictionary ideal for getting used to listening to English words and sentences and for improving passage listening comprehension. The dictionary also provides native speaker pronunciation of the 14,000 keywords of two English-Japanese dictionaries, namely Taishukan’s “Genius English-Japanese Dictionary” reputed for its treasure house of entries and detailed definitions, and Taishukan’s easy-to-understand “Basic Genius English-Japanese Dictionary” offering phonetic representation in katakana form and explanations with illustrations (*1).

To increase English reading comprehension, well-developed vocabulary and reading skills are required. Boasting over 400,000 copies printed nationwide, Oxford’s “Oxford Bookworms Library” designed with word entries limited to those used to construct literary text is a reference best suited for cultivating reading skills. “SR-V700” contains 10 carefully selected popular English novels from the “Oxford Bookworms Library,” including “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” Combined with the “Oxford Practical English Dictionary,” this dictionary aids in enhancing the user’s reading comprehension and reading skills of English passages.

The new model contains Japanese language dictionaries considered must-haves for the high school student, such as Taishukan’s “Meikyo Kokugo Jiten” (“Meikyo Japanese Language Dictionary”), which aids in modern language usage and proper word selection, and Iwanuma’s “Kojien,” a helpful reference for both language and other subjects due to the treasure house of entries provided, thereby enabling preparation for essay examinations that are a part of Japanese language classes and university entrance examinations, as well as dictionary use according to learning application.
For Japanese classics coursework that begins at the high school level, the new electronic dictionary also contains Sanseido’s “Zenyaku Dokkai Kogo Jiten” (“Dictionary for Classical Japanese Complete Translation and Reading Comprehension”) and Yamakawa Shoten’s “Sekaishi Shojiten” (“Concise Dictionary of World History”) and “Nihonshi Shojiten” (“Concise Dictionary of Japanese History”), thereby supporting high school learning from a variety of perspectives.

Functionally, the “Meikyo Kokugo Jiten” (“Meikyo Japanese Language Dictionary”) is provided with two search features (synonym group display and synonym search). The dictionary can also be used as a thesaurus, allowing the user to increase his or her vocabulary with words of similar meaning. The dictionary is also equipped with a “name registration function” for theft prevention. Equipped with SII’s unique PC-touch specification “kaiteki,” which makes keyboard entry even easier, the dictionary can be used stress free by the high school student of the PC generation. Equipped with a “SILUCA” card slot that permits later dictionary additions, the dictionary permits the user to add those dictionaries and references that are presently necessary. “SR-V4700” is an electronic dictionary that aids in high school student’s preparation, review and entrance examination studies.

*1. The pronunciation for Taishukan’s “Basic Genius English-Japanese Dictionary” uses the audio data of the “Genius English-Japanese Dictionary.”
