Seiko Instruments Inc. (Abbreviation: SII; President, CEO, COO & CFO: Yukihiko Chayama; Head Office: 1-8 Nakase, Mihama-ku, Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture; Tel: 043-211-1111) will release at the end of April “Dr. Voice neo ‘SV-E1100,'” the multi-listening player for language learning that is equipped with “learning text,” “audio playback (MP3)” and “electronic dictionary” features required for language listening studies, all in a compact body, the size of a commuter pass holder.
The new “Dr. Voice neo ‘SV-E1100′” model is a listening player equipped with an electronic dictionary that features specialized functions for language listening enhancement, allowing replacement of the learning content using SD model “SILUCA” (*1) blue cards.
The commuter pass holder size body is equipped with an image (*2) compatible touch-panel type 16-level gray scale high-resolution liquid crystal display, an MP3 playback feature as well as English-Japanese and Japanese-English dictionaries. With this dictionary, the user can play back listening content and display learning text by inserting a special “SILUCA” blue card that contains the learning text and audio data. By providing all listening exercises in a single “Dr. Voice neo” player, the new unit lets the language student study in style any time, anywhere. In addition, the new model is not just for learning. With its MP3 playback feature, the player can be used for music enjoyment as well.
This time around, “Dr. Voice neo ‘SV-E1100′” will be sold as a set with one content card. Three types of content cards are available, each geared toward a different target score of Obunsha’s “TOEIC ® Test: Listening” series. All cards contain Obunsha’s “TOEIC ® Tesuto Eitango Jukugo Masutarii 2000” (“TOEIC ® Test: English Word and Idiom Mastery 2000”) and are loaded with TOEIC listening section exercises as well as vocabulary enrichment learning features.
SII has a plan to develop and release about 10 new learning content cards with a variety of content over the next year.
The exercises of the TOEIC ® test listening section promote learning in the same manner as the book, in the order of “questions and answers,” “English to Japanese translation verification” and “explanations.” Diagnostic tests that proceed in the exact same manner as actual TOEIC ® tests are also included. Three sets of past answers can also be saved, allowing the user to measure his or her progress.
The learning content contains synchronized audio and text data, allowing the user to enhance his or her listening skills effectively by viewing the text while listening to the audio. The dictionary is also equipped with features essential for listening improvement and language learning, such as a “sentence repeat feature” that allows the user to repeat sentences which s/he could not comprehend by a single press of a button, a “playback speed control feature” that permits adjustment of the audio speed based on 9 levels, a “change view feature” that switches the view to the English sentence view or Japanese translation view instantaneously, and vocabulary enrichment exercises such as those provided on vocabulary cards, which are based on these functions. The player also allows the user to jump from learning content to the built-in electronic dictionary, permitting quick lookup of the unknown words that appear in the text. The dictionary includes Taishukan’s “Genius English-Japanese Dictionary” and “Genius Japanese-English Dictionary,” which are well established in learning venues. Equipped with the wild card search feature and idiom search feature, the player can be used as a full-scale electronic dictionary as well.
*1. “SILUCA” is a nickname for the SII Original Contents Card. “Dr. Voice neo” is “SILUCA” blue card compatible. “SILUCA” red cards are not supported.
